Issue Summary

You try to run the SharePoint 2013 Prerequisites installation in Windows Server 2012 and before going to far, you get an error message saying ‘The tool was unable to install Application Server Role, Web Server (IIS) Role’.

Cause

Really unexplained.. most likely bug.

Solution

This is surprisingly simple:

  1. Rename the file: c:\windows\system32\ServerManagement.exe  TO   ServerManagementCMD.exe
  2. Rerun the configuration prerequisite installer
